#1 WHY JAPAN'S ROBOTS AND CLONES WILL RULE THE WORLD
Without a doubt, the terrorist events of September 11th
will forever be the biggest story of 2001, we feel that this is obvious.
Hence, given that this story was covered exhaustively in the mainstream
press, we decided to make our number one story one that will most likely
foreshadow the near future of biotechnology-arguably the most important
area of science today. While the world is infatuated with the English speaking
nations of the world, the fact is that Japan is the second largest economy
on the planet. Therefore, when such a global power decides to start massive
cloning efforts, we all must take notice. In 2001 researchers at the Ishikawa
Prefecture Livestock Research Centre cloned two calves from an adult cow,
the first such success since Dolly the sheep, and further evidence that
this process can be duplicated.
Just months later, a group of researchers led by Makoto
Asashima, biology professor at Tokyo University, successfully grew eyeballs
in tadpoles using cells taken from frog embryos. Then, a mere week after
the transplant, the group confirmed the tadpole's eyeballs were connected
to the optic nerves and there were no rejection symptoms. In case you had
any doubts, take note that this "is" the future of medicine, food,
child birth, and supplemental drugs. |
