#5 BIGGEST LETDOWN THAT WAS REALLY A STEALTH POWER MOVE
Perhaps the biggest letdown of the year (next to the movie
"A.I."), the unveiling of the IT device may wind up being a stealth
paradigm changer. Inventor Dean Kamen got the buzz engine revved early in
2001, and the talk was that the IT device would change the way cities were
built. When The Segway, a self balancing electrical scooter, was finally
unveiled most people were supremely underwhelmed.
But even though seeing The Segway in action is like watching
scifi, the real story is Kamen's stealth approach to usurping the throne
of auto companies still married to fossil fuel. It doesn't take much to
imagine the electric powered, non-flat wheel sporting, molded metal Segway
as a car someday. And when that day comes, it will seem pretty foolish to
continue driving convention cars; especially if you have any concern for
the environment and the planet as a whole.
