#7 ALL YOUR WIRELESS NODES ARE BELONG TO US
The WiFi movement reminds us a lot of the early internet
days. Based on a wireless standard known as 802.11b, WiFi allows computer
users to access high speed wireless connections for internet surfing and
data transfers. Most of the energy driving WiFi has come from individuals
intent on providing free WiFi MANs (metropolitan area networks). But Sky
Dayton, founder and Chairman of ISP Earthlink has decided to try and cash
in on WiFi by creating Boingo, a company he hopes to use to link all the
indie WiFi nodes around the country.
Dayton hopes that by unifying these nodes and standardizing
the service with customer support, novice users will be inspired to pay
for the WiFi connections. It's too early to guess if Dayton's bet is on
the money, but the main hope has to be that early attention won't kill WiFi
like too much attention has scared most VCs away from the internet.
