#8 MY "X" IS LONGER AND HAS MORE GIRTH THAN
YOUR "X"
Two software makers came to the table this year with new
operating systems that were supposed to somehow change the game. Microsoft's
Windows XP, with its 8 kazillion lines of code, was supposed to be our desktop
savior. Meanwhile, Apple took a large step in the UNIX direction with the
release of OS X, an bloated OS that seems to completely render useless the
argument that Macs are better because of the simple user interface.
Shortly after the release of OS X, Apple released the new
iMac, which got some early jeers because it looks like a cross between a
lamp and dentist's tool of some sort. The new X's from both companies are
hardly more user-friendly, and come across more as bloatware for common
users. Keep an eye peeled for the upcoming release of Lindows, a new OS
based on Linux that the company's chief Michael Robertson (formerly of MP3.com)
says will easily run Microsoft products, but keep an open source edge. |
